Surviving on Shoestrings: Forming a Survival Group

SOS COLLAGE Charley HogwoodForming a Survival Group is the topic today on Surviving on Shoestrings.  Author Charley Hogwood, who wrote: “The Survival Group Handbook: How to Plan, Organize and Lead People For a Short or Long Term Survival Situation” joins me today.  Charley’s insight into the complexities when gathering ‘like-minded folks’ together to survive is both informative and enlightening.  He touches on a vital element we don’t often think of for survival – other people.

What does this have to do with making ends meet?  Think bartering, sharing skills, comrades on a difficult journey and more!

Surviving on Shoestrings: Prepper’s Long-Term Survival Guide

Wk 4 - Long-Term Survival GuideJuly 7, 2014:  Prepper’s Long Term Survival Guide is one of the more recent of the additions to several other books written by my guest Jim Cobb.  But I bet you didn’t know that it writing was one of many of the hats that Jim wears.

As Jim and many of you who listen regularly are well aware, preppers prepare for many different things in life.  Long-term Survival is only one area – but it’s obviously a more long-term goal than a day or two of inclement weather.

Jim and I get the opportunity to talk about his newest book and another that came out two days after this show was recorded.  I hope you enjoy getting to know Jim Cobb and connect with him at http://www.survivalweekly.com  as well as, http://www.disasterprepconsultants.com

PREPARE Magazine is also running a giveaway of the Prepper’s Long Term Survival Guide   if you’d like to enter for the opportunity to win a copy.   Simply follow this link -> HERE <- and fill out as many selections as you’d like.  Tweet daily for more opportunities and of course listen through this episode of Suriviging on Shoestrings for the code to have 10 extra points added in your name.

Surviving on Shoestrings: Stock Up Food!

Surviving on Shoestrings: Jason Barron GuestJune 30, 2014: “Stock up Food! Stock up Food! Stock up Food!” It’s the mantra of so many people who feel the need to prepare for the future. But just how do we keep track of all that stocked up food? So many of the food calculators/trackers and formulas irritated me for so long because they just did not suit the way our family ate.  Enter: StockUpFood.com. This was and still is the most user-friendly website I had ever seen to stock up food.  It became a great tool for us just prior to having to live out of our own food storage. I have shared this link with countless hundreds of folks since I first began using the website.  No, I am not an affiliate nor do I make an income from this… I just really like this site and it’s FREE.

I have the joy of interviewing Jason Barron, the CEO and founder of StockUpFood.com. You’ll be so interested in how this site works, but even better, you’ll love the mission and message behind why Jason created it to begin with. Not only that, but there is a code at the end of the show for you to have a lifetime of savings while you build up to a year’s supply of food.

Surviving on Shoestrings: Helping Kids Prepare

Jake and Miller cover1 A fun book for helping kids prepare, Jake and Miller’s Big Adventure: A Prepper’s Book for Kids is not only encouraging to children but also helps remind parents and grandparents alike that prepping is actually an adventure!  Helping kids prepare, plan and imagine scenarios develops critical thinking skills that will come in handy as they grow.

Today I’m joined by the author, Bernie Carr to talk about her newest book. She also authored the national bestseller: The Prepper’s Pocket Guide: 101 Easy Things You Can Do to Ready Your Home for a Disaster and runs the blog AppartmentPrepper.com

Although this is our first conversation, I know I’ve met a kindred spirit when it comes to helping kids prepare and keeping it within a budget!  We have a great time talking about how to get kids involved and saving money while we prep!

Speaking of saving money, I and several other bloggers and hosts are also offering a Giveaway of this very book.

Surviving on Shoestrings: Top 10 Household Items to Never Buy New

Surviving on Shoestrings: Top 10 Household Items to Never Buy NewJune 9, 2014  My Top 10 Household Items to NEVER buy NEW  actually came from one of my weekly trips to a thrift store. I realized how easy it is to “go get a new_____” when something breaks or we think we need it.  I’ll admit to often having that as my first though.  But over the years, I come up with at least ten (10) things I will never buy new – ever again!

So as I walked through the thrift store once again looking at all of the household items and I started to compile a list in my mind of the top things that we have learned that it actually pays for us to buy them used rather than shop for a new replacement. I’d like to share my list of items with you in this show and tell you why they made my list!

Surviving on Shoestrings: What NOT to Put Under the Kitchen Sink

What NOT to put under the Kitchen SinkJune 2, 2014:  What do you put under your kitchen sink?  This week, I’ll share with you 6 to 8 items of what NOT put under your kitchen sink and why.  We’ve been taught through example or simply developed habits of storing certain items right under the kitchen sink.  With plumbing, moisture and a variable heating and cooling environment – you might be surprised exactly what doesn’t work well there that you’ve just tossed under the kitchen sink out of habit.

Listen to this show and see if you are loosing money, wasting food or simply making it inconvenient for yourself just because it’s ‘what you’ve always done.’

Time to rethink what’s under the kitchen sink!

Surviving on Shoestrings: My “Make Do and Mend” Year – Buy nothing new!

Photo from - My Make Do and Mend YearMay 26, 2014:  Could you make do and mend… well, everything for one year?  Go a year without buying anything new?

I’m excited to visit with Jen Gale today. We share a kindred spirit and we hope her story inspires you to embrace a Make Do and Mend Year (or lifestyle!) and buy nothing new.

Jen lives in the South West of England with her lovely husband, and their two young boys, ages 5 and 3. In 2012, Jen persuaded the rest of the family to embark upon a year of Buying Nothing New, and kept a daily blog, My Make Do and Mend Year documenting their progress.

The year has officially finished but the blog carries on, and Making Do and Mending has now become a way of the life! Jen is passionate about spreading the word and getting people Making Do and Mending, not only to preserve our precious resources and save some money, but to learn some new skills and have fun too!

Best Blessings and enJOY the Journey,  Donna
